After over a decade of coaching people to write, pitch, and publish essays and opeds, and writing four books in five years, here’s what I’ve learned: Genius doesn’t write books, and inspiration doesn’t either. What writes books is a writing practice that works for you. What writes books is the ability to open your draft over and over again and do the work. It’s what my grandmother called sitzfleisch, or, the stamina to sit until the job is done.
